About us

The Klinikum Augsburg is the tertiary care hospital of the city of Augsburg and the district of Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. The Klinikum Augsburg offers 21 medical specialties and comprises 1600 beds.

Internal Medicine is represented by three closely cooperating departments. The I. Medizinische Klinik / I. Department of Internal Medicine focuses on cardiology, pneumology, internal intensive care medicine, endocrinology (except thyroid gland and diabetes) and general internal medicine. The I. Medizinische Klinik includes 166 beds, thereof 18 intensive care unit and 6 intermediate care unit beds.

The department is part of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. It is integrated in teaching and research activities of the university, in the MONICA/KORA project, participates in multicenter studies and is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Leitender Kardiologischer Krankenhausärzte (ALKK).

The department is part of the interdisciplinary Herzzentrum Augsburg-Schwaben / Augsburg-Swabia Heart Center, which includes the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery (Head Prof. M. Beyer MD), the Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine (Head Prof. H. Forst MD), the Department of Pediatric Cardiology (Head Prof. G. Buheitel MD) and the I. Department of Internal Medicine (Head Prof. W. von Scheidt MD). The Augsburg-Swabia Heart Center provides top-level medical care for children and adults with acute or chronic cardiovascular diseases.

The Division of Cardiology comprises noninvasive and invasive diagnostic evaluation and medical and interventional therapy of acute and chronic manifestations of coronary heart disease (24-hours cath lab facility for primary PCI in acute myocardial infarction, 3000 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations per year, 1250 percutaneous coronary interventions per year), transfemoral and transapical aortic valve implantation, interventional PFO-closure, alcohol ablation for HOCM, specialized intracoronary diagnostic evaluation, such as intracoronary ultrasound, pressure wire measurement, intracoronary doppler flow. Diagnostic and interventional electrophysiology is available including ablation of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Interventional cardiology and electrophysiology is performed in three modern, top level cath labs. Additional activities include evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic cardiac failure including pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, as well as evaluation and treatment of syncope. Specialized outpatient services are available for patients with pacemakers and ICDs, arrhythmias, cardiac failure, and syncope. For patients with resistant hypertension renal denervation is offered.

The Division of Internal Intensive Care Medicine (A. Bluethgen MD) cares mainly for patients with acute cardiac, pulmonary or endocrine diseases or sepsis. It is located in a modern 18 bed intensive care unit plus 6 bed intermediate care unit providing highest standard of care including noninvasive and invasive ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical circulatory support, mild therapeutic hypothermia, ultrafiltration and hemodialysis.

The Division of Pneumology (M. Schwaiblmair MD, PhD) deals with diagnostic work up and treatment of patients suffering from acute or chronic respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchial asthma, COPD and emphysema, interstitial lung diseases including fibrosis, mucoviscidosis. Additional expertise is available for the whole spectrum of pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, as well as sleep apnea syndromes. The division offers state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities including diagnostic bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and navigation systems, bronchial and pulmonary interventions (e.g. laser, argon plasma beamer, stents, endoscopic lung volume reduction), noninvasive ventilation, as well as a modern sleep laboratory.

The Division of Endocrinology (Th. Pusl MD, PhD) offers specialized diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic management of patients with diseases of the pituitary, the parathyroid and the adrenal glands, and the gonads. Special expertise is available for disorders of the lipid metabolism, including lipid apheresis.
